Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in serious but stable condition following an assassination attempt. Fico, 59, underwent a two-hour surgery to remove dead tissue from multiple gunshot wounds, with a good prognosis for recovery. He remains hospitalized in Banska Bystrica, unable to be transferred to a hospital in Bratislava.

The suspect, a 71-year-old retiree, allegedly attempted to assassinate Fico as he greeted supporters after a government meeting in Handlova. The suspect, not affiliated with any political groups, was subdued and arrested at the scene.

Prosecutors are seeking detention for the suspect, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed. The courthouse in Pezinok, where the suspect appeared, was heavily guarded, and media access was restricted.
